Figure 5.1. Typical granulometric histograms representing selected strata in Franchthi Cave. Numbers 1–5 through 2–20 are sediment sample numbers (see Appendix A). Histograms representing Strata Xl and V depict eboulis sees, while the others show prominent peaks of silt and clay. Also shown is a histogram of all 75 samples averaged together and a histogram showing the percentage of samples that include a peak in the five modes-coarse rock fragments, fine gravel, granules and sand, silt, and clay. The open histograms include samples in which the silt mode is present, but more diffuse, e.g., the sample from Stratum Y2 on the left.
